Plymouth Meeting Friends School
Located on the south west corner of the intersection of Germantown Pike and Butler Pikes.

    From Schuylkill Center
  • From intersection of Ridge Pike and Bells Mill Road go West on Ridge for 3 miles. Seventh light (including Bells Mill) is Butler Pike make right onto Butler and go .6 miles and look for entrance to Plymouth Meeting house on left approx .1 mile BEFORE intersection with Germantown Ave.
    From Chestnut Hill area
  • go west on Germantown Pike approx 3+ miles to intersection with Butler Pike. Entrance to Plymouth Meeting House is on left you can either make left directly into parking lot or make left onto Butler Pike and go .1 mile to entrance on right.
    From Pa turnpike/Plymouth Meeting Mall area.
  • Take exit # 333 Norristown make first right after tolls for Germantown Pike East. (Move to left lane.) Go through first light and up hill to entrance to Plymouth Meeting House just before intersection with Butler Pike.

Barnegat Light
located on the north end of Long Beach Island, NJ


  • Take the PA Turnpike East to the NJ Turnpike North
  • Follow the New Jersey Turnpike North to Route 206 exit
  • Route 206 (south) to Route 70 (east)
  • Route 70 (east) to Route 72 (east)
  • Cross the bridge onto Long Beach Island
  • At the third (and last) traffic light after the bridge, turn left onto Long Beach Blvd. Follow this road for about 8 miles and you will see the lighthouse.

The road name changes to Central Ave. in the town of Barnegat. Watch the cross streets as they count down from 30th. Around 8th St, there will be a road that forks to the left. Follow this to the Lighthouse parking lot on the right.

Cape May, NJ


  • In New Jersey, take Route 55 South
    (accessed from the Walt Whitman Bridge and Rte. 42 and from the Commodore Barry Bridge and Rt. 322 east)
  • Follow Rte. 55 south until it ends on Rt. 47 South
  • Follow Rt. 47 South
Campbell's Store & Gas Station is now closed but right across the street is the WAWA:
stay right on Rt. 47 south when the main road bears off to the left (Rt. 347) ; go to the 1st light: WAWA's is on the right.

For trips meeting in Cape May:

  • Bear left onto Rt. 347 South and follow it until it re-joins Rt. 47
  • Stay on Rt. 47 south to Rio Grande City.
  • In Rio Grande, at the intersection with Rt. 626; turn right and follow the road until it crosses over the Cape May Canal.
  • Stay straight on Bayshore Ave. (which turns into Broadway) until the light at Sunset Blvd.
  • Turn right onto Sunset Blvd and go to Lighthouse Drive
  • Turn left onto Lighthouse and follow it to entrance to the State Park on your left

Carpenter's Woods, Philadelphia

Carpenters Woods is located in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia. Entrance is from Wayne Ave. where it intersects with Sedgwick Street.

Conowingo Dam, MD


  • Follow Rt. 1 South into Maryland
  • Rt. 1 will cross over the Conowingo Dam
  • Go to the 1st left hand turn
  • Go to the next left hand turn which will take you down to the River
  • Turn left and drive to the parking lot at the base of the dam

Meeting Place: Wilmington Airport (a.k.a. New Castle County Airport)
  • Take I-95 South from Philadelphia
  • Take I-495 south around Wilmington
  • Take Exit 1 - there is a sign for Rt 13 south and the airport
  • Follow Rt. 13 south to the airport which is on your right

The airport and its parking lot and very small so it is easy to find the group. This is an excellent place to leave your car for those interested in carpooling. We will travel south from this point, gradually working our way to Bombay Hook. Our route will depend on weather and birds.


Meeting Place: Bombay Hook Visitor Center

  • Follow -I95 South from Philadelphia
  • Take I-495 around Wilmington
  • I-495 merges with I-95 south of Wilmington
  • Continue on I-95 to Route 1 South
  • Follow Route 1 / Route 13 south to the exit for the Smyrna Rest Area
  • Follow Route 13 south past the cemetary on your left to the stoplight
  • Turn left at the light onto Road 12 (sign for Bombay Hook NWR).
  • Follow Road 12 east for 4.7 miles until it merges with Route 9 .
  • Bear right (south) onto Route 9 and continue for 0.5 mile.
  • Turn left (east) on Route 85 and go 2.4 miles to the Bombay Hook NWR Visitor Center.
Trip may continue on to points south of Bombay Hook.

NOTES:
  • Be sure to bring lunch and enough drinking water - especially for the summer trip
  • Bugs can be a problem, so bring a good insect repellant and protective clothing
  • Restrooms & pay phone are located at the Bombay Hook Visitor's Center.

Ft. Washington State Park

Ft. Washington State Park is in Montgomery Co., PA. Entrance to the park is from Joshua Road (between Stenton Ave. and Militia Hill road) OR from Militia Hill Road (between Skippack Pike and Joshua Road).

Follow the road to the top of the hill where you will find the Militia Hill Hawk Watch parking lot adjacent to the hawk watch platform. Restrooms available.

Entrance to this part of the park is from Mill road between Stenton Ave. and Bethlehem Pike.

Gwynedd Nature Preserve

From the intersection of Route 202 and Route 73:

  • Drive north on Route 202, past Montgomery County Community College and the light at Morris Road.
  • Take the next left onto Township Line Road and then
  • Take the first right onto Swedesford Road.
  • Continue for about a half-mile until you see the preserve entrance on the left.

Hawk Mountain, PA

From Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: 1.5 to 2 hours
• Take Northeast Turnpike Extension (I-476)
• NORTH to Exit 56 (Lehigh Valley)
• To Rt. 22 WEST toward Harrisburg (becomes I-78 West)
• To Exit 35 (Lenhartsville)
• On Rt. 143 NORTH, go 4 miles to Sunoco gas station on right
• Turn LEFT at blue Hawk Mountain sign onto Hawk Mt. Road
• Go to top of mountain; turn LEFT into parking lot

Hawkin Road & Bright View Farm, NJ

Hawkin Road
  • Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike East to the New Jersey Turnpike.
  • Take the New Jersey Turnpike North to Exit 7 to Route 206 South
  • Take Route 206 South for 16.5 miles to the Circle at Route 70/206
  • Stay on Route 206 South for 1.7 miles and turn right unto Hawkin Road
    (this is the first traffic light you come to after the circle)
  • Stay on Hawkins Road for 3.1 miles until you come to a wooden bridge. Park along the side of the road being sure not to block traffic.

Allow 90 minutes from the Fort Washington Interchange of the PA Turnpike. Hawkin Road is home to many species of breeding warblers including Hooded, Worm-eating, Prothonotary and Ovenbird as well as other woodland species.

Alternatively, you could take Route 73 to Route 70 to Route 206 and follow from above.

Please note the trails at Hawkin Road can be very wet and muddy. Wellies or other above the ankle boots are strongly recommended.

From Hawkin Road which is a Natural Lands Trust properly we will travel to Bright View Farm. The farm is private working horse farm that the owner graciously opens to birders. She delays cutting the hay in at least or pasture each year to allow Bobolinks, Meadowlarks, and several species of sparrow to complete their nesting cycle. Please be respectful of this privilege so that all birders may continue to enjoy this for years to come.

  • We will continue straight on Hawkin Road for 0.7 miles until Skeet Street
  • Take a right onto Skeet Road and stay on it for 0.5 miles until you come to Route 70
  • Take a Right onto Route 70 West for 2.8 miles until you return to the 206/70 Circle
  • Take Route 206 North for 9 miles until you come to Route 537 East
  • Turn Right until Route 537 East an stay on it for 6 miles until the traffic light at Route 545
  • Turn Left onto Route 545
  • The entrance to the farm is several hundred yards up Route 545 on the right
Please drive slowly and when we park please keep the right of way clear.

John Heinz (Tinicum), PA

From the South:
  • - Traveling on I-95 North, take Exit 10 (on to Rt. 291)
  • - At the first light, turn left onto Bartram Ave.
  • - At the third light, turn left onto 84th St.
  • - At the second light, turn left onto Lindbergh Blvd.
From the North:
  • -Traveling on I-95 South, take Exit 14 (Bartram Ave.)
  • - Take the right fork exiting for 291 Lester.
  • - At the light make a right onto Bartram Ave.
  • - At the second light, turn left onto 84th Street
  • -At the second light make a left onto Lindbergh Blvd.
From the Schuylkill Expressway:
  • -Traveling on I-76 East, stay in left lan and follow signs for Rte.291 West/I-95 South/Airport.
  • - At the light, turn right onto Rte.291 West.
  • - Follow signs to I-95 South.
  • - Traveling on I-95 South, take the Rte. 291/Airport Exit 10.
  • - Take the right fork, exiting for Rte.291/Lester.
  • - At the first light, turn right onto Bartram Ave.
  • - At the second light, turn left onto 84th St.
  • - At the second light, turn left onto Lindbergh Blvd.
From the Blue Route:
  • -Traveling on I-476 South, stay in the left lane, and follow signs for I-95 North
  • - Off of I-95, take the Rte.291/Airport Exit.
  • - At the first light, turn left onto Bartram Ave.
  • - At the third light, turn left onto 84th St.
  • - At the second light, turn left onto Lindbergh Blvd.

Sandy Hook, N.J.

  • PA Turnpike EAST to the NJ Turnipke
  • NJ Turnpike NORTH to exit 7A
  • Route 195 EAST towards "shore points"
  • exit at the Garden State Parkway NORTH exit just before Shark River
  • Take the Garden State Parkway NORTH to the Route 520 exit
  • Follow Route 520 EAST as it winds its way to the shore.
  • Take Route 36 NORTH and follow the signs into Sandy Hook National Seashore.
  • Meet at the Visitor Center parking lot.

Shark River, N.J.

  • Take the PA Turnpike east to the NJ Turnpike
  • Go north on the NJ Turnpike to exit 7A (Rt. 195)
  • Follow Rt. 195 EAST until it ends in the town of Belmar, NJ.
  • Go past the entrance to the Marina on your left to Pat's Resturant on your right

Woodlawn Trust, DE

  • Route 476 South to Route 1 South
  • Route 1 South to Route 202 South
  • Route 202 South to Route 92 West (watch for left hand turn to stay on 92 west)
  • Turn right onto Ramsey and follow to the parking lot, approximately 1 mile on right.

    Allow approx. 60 minutes.
