Wyncote Audubon Society Scholarships

Each year the Wyncote Audubon Society offers our Griscum Scholarship to the National Audubon Society's Ecology Camps and Workshops. Scholarships cover the cost of the camp or workshop but not travel expenses.

National Audubon Summer Camps offer members the opportunity to participate in field studies ranging from geology and marine life to birds, mammals, plants, insects, weather, astronomy, population and renewable energy.

Recreational opportunities include exploring wild islands off the coast of Maine, rafting in Wyoming or roaming the lovely, lush woods of Connecticut. In addition to the workshop programs, there are special sessions for children at the Maine Camp, introductory field ecology for educators in Connecticut and field ornithology in Maine.

Scholarship applications are open to adults and child members of Wyncote. The decision will be made by the Scholarship committee based upon the qualifications of the applicant. Partial scholarships are sometimes awarded.

The deadline for applications (for 2008) is January 31, 2008. For information and application forms, contact our Scholarship Chair Andy Fayer

Maine Audubon Camp

"I have had the pleasure of attending two of the camps sponsored by the National Audubon Society, thanks to scholarships for teachers granted by Wyncote Audubon. My first experience was a week-long stay at the Maine camp on Hog Island in late August... bird-banding demonstrations, boat trips to neighboring islands like Monhegan Island, wonderful looks at rafts of Common Eider, and guided hikes around Hog Island. Accommodations were comfortable, and the food was wonderful."

Grand Tetons, Wyoming

"A couple of years after that I attended the Wyoming Audubon Camp in the Wind River Basin: a two-week long program which included workshops in geology, butterfly identification, birding and pond and stream study. We were also treated to daily bird-banding demonstrations. There was ample opportunity for hiking, fishing and canoeing. A day trip took us to the Continental Divide where views of the Grand Tetons were spectacular. The cabins were very comfortable, and the food delicious."
